The Legal Department of JPMorgan Chase & Co provides legal services and advice to the Firm globally. Legal is responsible for, among other things:

  • Managing actual and potential litigation and enforcement matters, including internal reviews and investigations related to such matters
  • Advising on products and services, including contract negotiation and documentation
  • Advising on offering and marketing documents and new business initiatives
  • Managing dispute resolution
  • Interpreting existing laws, rules and regulations, and advising on changes thereto
  • Advising on advocacy in connection with contemplated and proposed laws, rules and regulations
  • Providing legal advice to the Board of Directors, the business and functions.

Legal selects, engages and manages outside counsel for the Firm on all matters in which outside counsel is engaged.

The Legal Department of J.P. Morgan is seeking a talented, highly motivated individual to join us in supporting the Alternative Investments group within J.P. Morgan Wealth Management, a unit of J.P. Morgan Asset & Wealth Management.

About the Alternative Investments Group

The Alternative Investments group of J.P. Morgan Wealth Management is responsible for overseeing over $90 billion of client committed capital in alternative investment assets across hedge funds, real estate and private equity.

  • Advise on in structuring, organizing, offering and maintaining onshore and offshore private funds and funds of funds, in particular hedge funds, private equity funds and real estate funds
  • Draft, review and negotiate offering materials, agreements with service providers, subscription agreements, placement agent agreements, side letters, agreements with counterparties, confidentiality agreements, disclosure documents, client agreements, client communications, marketing and other documentation.
  • Work in a cross-functional team consisting of Legal, Corporate Tax, Compliance, Supervision and Risk to address day to day questions and other issues.
  • Provide Legal coverage of regulatory change implementation.
  • Advise on product and entity governance issues, and cross-line of business information barrier and conflicts issues.
  • Assist in the development of policies, procedures, systems and training materials.
  • Advise on resolution of disputes with counterparties.
  • Engage and supervise external counsel where outside expertise is warranted.
Requirements
  • Excellent academic record (transcript required). 5+ years of relevant post-degree practice experience at a top tier law firm, bank and/or investment firm. In-house experience not essential.
  • Must have expert knowledge of onshore and offshore private funds, Investment Advisers Act, fund formation, fund transactions, fund documentation and an understanding of products funds invest in.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills, can communicate effectively.
  • Excellent legal analytical, drafting and negotiation skills.
  • An organized self-starter able to handle and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must be willing to learn new areas of the law.
  • Solutions oriented, strategic thinker, collaborative-ability to understand respond to the business needs and partner with the businesses and control functions.
  • JD or educational equivalent required. Attorney candidates must be in compliance with all relevant licensing requirements including the requirements of the jurisdiction where the role will be located, prior to the commencement of employment.
  • All candidates for roles in the Legal Department must successfully complete a conflicts of interest clearance review prior to commencement of employment.
