Bain & Company is seeking to recruit a Manager to build upon the firm’s Commercial Excellence capabilities in the Americas. This will be a client-facing role that will involve deep interactions with clients as well as working with multiple teams and capability centers across Bain.  Bain currently works with its clients to develop a clear GTM strategy including building an in-depth understanding of market opportunity, developing effective GTM sales coverage and capacity models to attack that opportunity, and creating an industrialized sales execution capability to ensure commercial success. The initial primary focus area of the Manager will be in supporting market opportunity definition work (i.e. building a deep understanding of opportunity at an individual customer and product level), though this will broaden over time and also include other elements of commercial excellence work.

This person will likely come from a consulting organization where they had a focus on commercial excellence strategy or having specialized in that area at a more generalized firm. In addition, the individual should have a track record of success in identifying issues, creating hypotheses, executing analysis, and managing others in a way that has moved the client to action. Individuals with industry experience in commercial operations will also be considered, provided they show the ability to develop the consultant skillset.

The person will need to interface with the consulting team manager, the commercial excellence center of expertise (currently based out of India) as well as Bain partners / Expert VPs to deliver in end-client engagements and capture IP for ongoing process improvement. The role would also provide the opportunity to work with Practice / Product leaders to design the optimal approach to product delivery by leveraging the appropriate offshore-onshore model. The individual would be deployed across ~1 – 3 different client engagements at any given time supported by the CE CoE. In all of these deployments, they would be expected to leverage key software tools specifically developed for Commercial Excellence engagements.

Responsibilities

Client-facing

  • Work with case team manager to understand the scope of work; provide relevant advice on Commercial Excellence, delivery model, and applicable (internal and 3rd party) software tools
  • Project manage market opportunity definition workstreams; including defining deliverables, setting timelines, and delivering high-quality output
  • Liaise with client map to understand client systems, data sources/structures relevant for Commercial Excellence work
  • Assist in the facilitation of key workshops and interviews with clients to develop hypotheses and build buy-in related to Commercial Excellence work
  • Support, and lead on-shore / off-shore teams to perform predefined, as well as, custom analyses
  • Be willing to support client training (in conjunction with consulting manager, other case team members, and Next-Gen consultants) in use of relevant Commercial Excellence software tools and advise case teams on how to use full tool capabilities, as needed
  • Manage and support set-up and configuration process of CE tools, working with case teams, as needed. This may include:
  • Supporting the scoping of tool usage within case context, and identifying visuals to support key questions
  • Flexibility to serve as first-line support during tool deployment phase for user queries and escalates / delegates where appropriate
  • Co-locating with the Bain case team throughout case duration as required

Capability/practice building

  • Become a go-to-market opportunity definition and broader CE expert internally
  • Work closely with Bain Capability Network initiative leader and product manager to help with proposals and other areas as required to deepen the ability to serve and increase adoption of CoE based delivery model
  • Support Bain’s ongoing effort in actively bolstering Commercial Excellence products
  • Support Bain Capability Netowork lead in ongoing dialogue with key stakeholders to understand future and changing needs and influence team priorities, capabilities and structure accordingly
  • Proactively suggests solutions; drives new demand for CoE, within and beyond the current scope
  • Work with NGSS team and Commercial Excellence practice to develop and refine training manuals, user guides, and other training materials (e.g., videos)

Team engagement

  • Communicate effectively with the case team concerning the work, the client relationship, and any CoE cadence/timelines
  • Exert strong positive influence and professional development for team members by leveraging content expertise to provide coaching on problem-solving, work-planning, data analysis, etc. as applicable
  • Constructively engage in mutual feedback process with supervisor and team members
  • Participate in developing programmatic elements of the Commercial Excellence CoE including planning, recruiting, developing people, training, etc. as required

Technology product awareness and adoption

  • Understand the Bain Commercial Excellence software toolkit, and uses this to advise consulting case teams and clients on relevant tool features to utilize in case deployment, in conjunction with Practice Product Owners
  • Assist the NGSS team in collecting, aggregating, and synthesizing user feedback related to key CE software tools to support the practice and works with NGSS in developing and prioritizing software enhancements and roadmap
  • Deliver demos to Bain and client stakeholders for Commercial Excellence software tools
  • Provide new / pipeline case teams with relevant examples from previous users and other proposal collateral (e.g., dashboard screenshots, training materials, executive presentations)
Requirements

Required:

  • BA or equivalent
  • Distinct commercial excellence, ideally with business consulting experience. We are looking for candidates that fit at least one of the below two criteria:
  • At least 2-3 years of consulting experience in commercial excellence projects
  • 4+ years of prior industry level experience in commercial operations (MBA preferred in this case
  • Ability to quickly pick up and apply complex topics
  • Strong abilities in problem definition and problem-solving
  • Excellent analytical capabilities and experience using complex modeling and analysis to inform key business decisions
  • Excellent oral, written, and PowerPoint communication skills
  • Proven ability to work effectively, and manage others in diverse and distributed teams
  • Ability to work well with all levels within Bain and at client
  • Ability to lead interactions with senior stakeholders (at Bain or Client)
  • Comfort working independently and/or remotely from supervisors in a fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to travel to client locations (expected 20-40%, potential peak of 60%)

Preferred:

  • MBA
  • Formal Agile/SCRUM certification
  • Experience supporting deployment of SaaS solutions with customers/clients or similar roles
  • Experience in software customer success roles
  • Experience in technology product management
  • Experience in project management
  • Prior experience using tools to analyze and visualize large data-sets (e.g., Alteryx, Tableau)
  • Prior experience working with 3rd party commercial excellence tools (e.g., Lattice, Alignstar, Regiograph, Anaplan, etc.)
  • This role can be located in Chicago or Dallas
